Following completion of his orthopedic residency at the University of West Virginia, Dr. Powell completed a sports medicine fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri where his year-long training experience included working with professional, collegiate and high school sports teams. Dr. Powell's patients included members of The St. Louis Rams football team; the St. Louis Blues hockey team; the Washington University Collegiate Athletics Department and a variety of high school athletics departments in and around the St. Louis area.
In 1997 Dr. Powell returned to Northwest Arkansas to enter private practice. In addition to treating patients in his clinic, Dr. Powell provides orthopedic services to several local high school sports programs including athletes at his alma mater, Fayetteville High School. Dr. Powell practices general orthopedics and sports medicine. He has extensive training and experience in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee and shoulder, including joint replacement. His practice serves the orthopedic needs of a diverse population including children, adult and senior adult patients. Treatment for sports-related and industrial injuries is included in the comprehensive range of services offered by his clinic.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Powell's accomplishments include the design of a clinically-proven splint now patented for use in treating plantar fasciitis. Dr. Powell is currently involved in the research and development of new therapies for the treatment of tendinitis. His publication credits include co-authorship of numerous medical journal articles related to the treatment of plantar fasciitis and he has participated in multiple arthroscopic and sports-related research projects.
Dr. Powell has been recognized for his professional achievements including being named UAMS Clinical Faculty Teacher of the Year 2000-2001; a member of Who's Who in Executives and Professionals (2001-02); and one of the Top 40 Under 40 Professionals in Northwest Arkansas. He is a member of several of the most respected organizations within the medical community, including: University of Arkansas Sports Medicine Academic Advisory Council; Hyalgan Advisory Board; The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; The Arthroscopy Association of North America; The American Medical Association; and The Southern Medical Association. Dr. Powell also served as a member of the Northwest Health System Medical Executive Board.

Dr. Powell and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Fayetteville with their two children, Kailey and Taylor. The doctor's passion for sports extends to involvement in the community; he coaches local youth sports including girls' and boys' basketball, football and baseball. An avid fly fisherman, Dr. Powell holds the distinction of having been named in the International Game and Fish Association World Record Book five years in a row for his stream fishing prowess.
